About the research (Photo: Andreas Gärdnert, Natalie Greppi)

Research is conducted at the Academy of Music and Drama in the subjects of musical performance and interpretation, performance practices, music education and arts education. The research is based primarily on artistic and educational practices within music, theatre, dance and musical theatre, but often also explores broader scholarly, existential and social questions.

Artistic research

According to the Swedish Research Council’s definition, artistic research takes “its point of departure from the artistic process and practice”, but it also expands and complements the humanities and cultural studies, as well as the social and natural sciences. Artistic research was established at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts as a research discipline of its own standing around the year 2000, and is in many instances based on developments within musicology and theatre studies.

Research in teaching and educational sciences

According to the Swedish Research Council, research in teaching and educational sciences involves “research within the field of learning, knowledge formation, education and teaching”. Music education was established at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts as its own research discipline and as a third-cycle subject area in 2000, and has roots in musicology, musical interpretation and education. Research within the field of arts education involves the study of teaching and learning processes in schools and teacher education in the interdisciplinary aesthetic knowledge area.

Research at the Academy of Music and Drama strives to highlight studies seeking to create deepened insight and meaning for learning, teaching and artistic practice. The research is based on both artistic and specialist practices as well as different social and scholarly fields.
