Brittish student Madeleine Allsop (b. 1996) has received the Anders Walls Confidencen scholarship of SEK 100.000. Madeleine is a sopraon and master student in opera at the Academy of Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg, where she studies under Åsa Bäverstam.

Madeleine grew up in Plymouth in south-west England. Her mother, a musician playing the cello and the piano, encouraged her daughter early on to take piano and violin lessons. On weekends, Madeleine went to the acting school Stagecoach Performing Arts, which aroused her interest in musical theater. At the age of twelve, she began taking lessons in classical singing for a former opera singer who laid the foundation for her technique. At the same time, her love for opera grew.

After high school she studied a BA in music at King's College in London with an emphasis on music history but she continued to take private singing lessons. She was also a member of the academy's opera company and made appearances such as Cleopatra in Julius Caesar and Barbarina in The Marriage of Figaro. Madeleine now decided to focus entirely on singing and continued with a master's degree in vocal performance at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

– It was a very rewarding education and a dream for me to be surrounded daily by music and opera, Madeleine tells the Anders Walls Foundation.

At the same time, she made her professional debut at Hampstead Garden Opera as Elisetta in Cimarosa's Il matrimonio segreto and learned what it is like to study a role and work with a conductor, which made her want more.

Madeleine's dream roles currently include Titania in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream and La Folie from Rameaus Platée. Musical sources of inspiration are Slovak soprano Lucia Popp, especially as Queen of the Night in the Magical Flute, one of the first opera recordings Madeleine owned, and the American opera singer Barbara Bonney.

It was love in the form of a Swedish boyfriend from the town of Lysekil, now a student at Chalmers University, who brought Madeleine to Sweden, where she is currently studying the master's programme in opera at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg. Also, she did already enjoy singing Swedish romances and wanted to learn the language better. Today, Madeleine is enjoying life in Sweden and is happy to stay. She has been given an internship at Opera Warberg this summer, where she will do the part of Zerlina in Don Giovanni, the first real role where she gets to sing in Swedish.

– Opera in Sweden is wonderful! she says. The scholarship means a lot. It gives me the opportunity to finish my master's studies without stress and invest in a professional opera career.
