A Century in Two Acts

Performance

From Haydn to Hindemith in 100 years: Two short operas constitute the autumn's final production from the Bachelor's programme in opera together with the University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and conductor Henry Schaefer.

Joseph Haydn's The Apothecary: In Sempronio's pharmacy, the young gentlemen Volpino and Mengone fight over the attention of the charismatic Grilletta, while the apothecary himself dreams of travel to distant lands. Preferably in the company of Grilletta... Classical opera buffa - like a comic strip in a 18th-century setting!
Paul Hindemith's The Long Christmas Dinner: Here we meet the Bayard family in the American countryside. Around the same dinner table, ninety years elapse, family members are born, grow old and die in an interminable, ongoing Christmas dinner. Based on a play of the same name by Thornton Wilder.
