Research profile seminar

Welcome to the a PARSE Dialogue "Two sides of a coin: A reading of contemporary and traditional art practices in Turkey" with Isil Egrikavuk and Hülya Arik. The Dialogue is organized in collaboration with the University's Gender Studies Programme.

"Two sides of a coin: A reading of contemporary and traditional art practices in Turkey."

Hülya Arik and Isil Egrikavuk will speak about the two (seemingly) oppositional practices in the art scene in Turkey, addressing how they take up questions of cultural heritage, ownership, conservatism and nationality.

Egrikavuk will present on her own artistic research and on a selection of projects in the contemporary art scene in Turkey. Arrk will speak on her ethnographic research on the Islamic/traditional visual arts scene in Istanbul.

Their presentations will start a dialogue to explore the social and political forces that shape the differentiated practice of both contemporary and traditional arts from a transnational perspective. Issues related to belonging, heritage and co-existence will be discussed in exploring new ways of envisioning social change through cultural practice.

This event is free and open to the public. No sign up required.

Isil Egrikavuk is an artist, researcher and teacher at the Media and Communication Faculty at Berlin University of the Arts (UdK).

Hülya Arik is a feminist and cultural geographer, currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Gender Studies Program, Cultural Sciences Department, University of Gothenburg.

Moderator: Kristina Hagström-Ståhl, PARSE professor at the Academy of Music and Drama, University of Gothenburg.
