Unusual Opera Project in New Documentary Film

Published

In a new documentary film in four episodes, viewers are invited behind the scenes of the production of the opera Dido and Aeneas at the Academy of Music and Drama.

In this unique version of Henry Purcell's 17th century opera, students from the opera programme collaborate with the master's students in orchestral performance, bachelor students in classical music, composition and world music students. Purcell's music is framed by newly composed parts created by the school's composition students and one of the country's great composers of contemporary vocal music: Paula of Malmborg Ward. In the film we follow Lisa, Sara and Raphael; students from the various programmes through the process, from confusion and uncertainty to a finished production and – spoiler alert – a celebrated and sold out premiere. We also meet director William Relton and conductor Henrik Schaefer along with several other employees and students. The film is produced by the Department of Media Technology at the University of Gothenburg.
