Teacher Education in Music

Teacher education programmes

The Academy of Music and Drama trains and educates music teachers for the elementary (basic) school level and sixth-form college. It also trains and educates drama teachers for sixth-form college. The teacher education programmes are taught in Swedish.

Music teacher

In this programme, you will receive tuition on your main instrument with special focus on the music you prefer to play e.g. improvisatory jazz or classical music. You will also attend lectures, seminars, clinics, workshops and ensemble sessions along with the students on the programme for musicians.

You will also have tuition in singing/speech, theory, music technology, ensemble leading and other subjects of relevance for your future professional role.

You will learn about teaching and learning methods and you will be able to discuss attitudes and how to solve different kinds of problem that occur in encounters with children and young people.

You will be working on various projects during your training, artistic as well as pedagogical.
In one of those projects, you yourself as a musician will be the centre of focus and in the other you will act as a teacher with pupils at sixth-form college level, focusing on their musical performances.

During your training you will choose one or more subjects in which to specialise: music theory, composition, choir/choral conducting, music production, instrument/ensemble. These subjects are included in the music courses at sixth-form college level and we work in close contact with the aims and course descriptions of sixth-form colleges in order to gain as good an insight as possible into your future place of work.

You will have teaching practice so that you can use what you have learnt during didactics at the Academy and test various models for learning and teaching. The experiences that you gain during teaching practice will be invaluable when you return to the Academy as a basis for discussion, problematisation and development along with your classmates and teachers.

We want to educate you to be a music teacher with the sixth-form college as your main focus, but we also want to make the programme broad enough to allow you to envision working at sixth-form college, basic or elementary school, culture school, free groups, adult educational institutes and churches etc. In other words, we want to train and educate music teachers with broad qualifications who are able to work in a variety of environments. We also want to train you in entrepreneurship since many choose to work both as musicians and music teachers.

We meet music teacher education students Gabriella Josefsson and Joakim Nilsson during their internships at Hvitfeldtska gymnasiet to find out more about their relation to music and why they want to be teachers. This video is in Swedish.
