World music education within higher music education – a critical collaborative ethnography

Contact: ingrid.hedin.wahlberg@hsm.gu.se

Ingrid Hedin WahlbergI am a PhD candidate here at the Academy of Music and Drama since 2015 and my position is in music education. My research interest is in world music education in higher music institutions in Sweden, and is a critical collaborative ethnography: Critical in the sense that the study has a postcolonial critical perspective, using emergent methods in the field to examine the specific educational aspects of world music education. Collaborative by involving key representatives of the field in a dialogue throughout the study. I use a constructivist stance and a postcolonial critical perspective, with an interest of examining how different discourses shape the practice of world music in higher educational settings. My research focus is to examine how world music education is constructed in the actual settings of higher music institutions and how musical practices within the programs are shaped by certain discourses. I have a background as a singer of folk music genres and as a music teacher.
