Social conditions for children's participation in arts and music schools

Contact: cecilia.jeppsson@hsm.gu.se

Cecilia JeppssonIn my graduate studies, I am interested in exploring social inclusion of children and youth in arts and music schools. Questions that I am curious in are: From which social groups do students in arts and music schools come? What are the socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds of the active students, and how is this possibly connected with the way teaching is conducted? What do the children themselves think about why they are included or not included in arts and music school activities?

El Sistema's efforts also interest me regarding social conditions when they involve a music teaching concept with expressed social aspirations. I'm curious about how those involved regard, talk about and design their activities and also about the children's perspectives, and I plan to conduct a survey making use of a discourse-analytical perspective.

I am a music teacher and have worked with wind instruments in the arts and music schools for many years. In parallel, I have studied psychology and work science, which contributes by providing multiple perspectives.

I share my interest in the arts and music schools with my supervisor Monica Lindgren, professor of music education, and Åsa Bergman, senior lecturer in cultural sciences.

I am a self-financed, full-time doctoral student in arts education, and employed at the Academy of Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg.
