Staff at the MA Programme in Symphonic Orchestra Performance

Artistic direction

Conductor Henrik Schaefer is artistically responsible for the programme. Henrik Schaefer also holds the position of Artistic Director at the Göteborg Opera orchestra with whom he performed Le nozze di Figaro, Mozarts Requiem, The Magic Flute etc. The last couple of years Henrik Schaefer has been engaged with many swedish orchestras. In 2011 he performed Wagners Der Ring des Nibelungen with Värmlandsoperan in Karlstad.
As viola player he was the youngest member of the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra ever and in the year 2000 he was chosen as Claudio Abbado's assistant conductor.

Faculty members

The main coaches for the students are the principal players from the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Many of them teach at the Academy of Music and Drama, and other Nordic music conservatoires. Members of the Opera orchestra are also engaged in the programme.

There are also a number of teachers employed by the hour as well as guest teachers. The instrumental teachers also work with chamber music and ensemble tutoring.

Conductors and soloists

Henrik Schaefer conducts one orchestral production and one opera production with the University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra during each academic year. Guest conductors from Sweden and abroad conduct the remaining productions. Among previous guest conductors, the following have appeared: Christian Zacharias, Olaf Henzold, Patrik Ringborg, Eva Ollikainen, Steven Sloane, Petri Sakari, Michel Tabachnik och Tobias Ringborg.

Among soloists the following have appeared: Christian Zacharias, Antje Weithaas, Roland Pöntinen, Irene Verburg, Andreas Brantelid, Tine Thing Helseth, Maria Fontosh.
