This information concerns applications to the Master's programme of Fine Arts in Music with specialization in Symphonic Orchestra Performance.

Admission process for study start autumn 2018

The following information applies to those who have applied to the Master's programme of Fine Arts in Music with specialization in Symphonic Orchestra Performance during the period December 1, 2017, until January 1, 2018.

You apply to the master's programme in symphonic orchestra performance in several steps.

1) Application
After submitting your electronic application on www.universityadmissions.se, you must complete your application with certificates and diplomas of your completed bachelor's degree, ID documents and other documents. Detailed instructions can be found here. 
You don't need to upload proof of your English language skills. Your English language skills are tested at the auditions.
Your application will not be considered complete if any documents are missing. Questions concerning the application should be made directly to www.universityadmissions.se.

2) Notice to Attend Audition
About three weeks before the auditions, you will receive an e-mail message with a personal notice to attend. The notice will include all relevant orchestra excerpts.

3) Auditions
Auditions take place in calender week 10 (2018) at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg.

Orchestra Instruments
Roll call will be carried out at the Academy of Music and Drama according to information in the notice to attend. Each applicant will be allotted 15 minutes audition time (the opportunity of a run-through with a pianist is available 10 minutes before the audition). The jury will make a brief intervju with you.

  • Ten minute solo performance with pieces from two distinct eras.
  • Required opera score (to be submitted approx. 3 weeks in advance).
  • Required orchestra score (to be submitted approx. 3 weeks in advance).
  • Performance task: you will have 15–30 minutes to prepare for a lied to perform together with one of the Academy's opera students.
  • At sight test.

The jury will make a brief intervju with you.

4) Recording - NB! Does Not Apply to Pianists
If you are unable to show up at the Academy of Music and Drama for an audition, you can provide us with a video recording instead. We will ask you via mail whether want to submit a video recording or attend the auditions in Gothenburg after the last date for application. If you choose to apply through a recording, you will receive an e-mail with the compulsory orchestra excerpts at the same time as the other applicants.

For the purpose of handling and reviewing work samples, we use an external service provided by SlideRoom Technologies Inc. By using the service, you agree that the University of Gothenburg may handle your personal data and material submitted via SlideRoom in order to evaluate your application for education. The material you upload remains with SlideRoom until you choose to remove it from their servers. 

Here you can register to SlideRoom and upload your work samples. You can upload your work samples from the day you received the orchestra excerpts. Your work samples must be uploaded between the 9 February and 2 March.
NOTE! Material you have uploaded to SlideRoom can no longer be edited or deleted.

The University of Gothenburg may, by individual agreement with the applicant and in a way that the university decides, offer an alternative opportunity to submit work samples.

Requirements when recording a video:

  • The recording has to be of high sound quality.
  • The applicant must be in focus with face, arms and instrument clearly showing
  • Compulsory concert must have piano included in the recording. The recording must be one take with no editing.

  • Compulsory excerpts have to be played in numerical order. The recording must be one take with no editing.

Entrance Requirements

Bachelor degree of arts in music or equivalent. Musical knowledge and skills are assessed at the admission test and are the basis for selection.
