Admission process for study start autumn 2018

The following information applies to those who have applied to the Master's of Fine Arts Programme in Music with specialization in Composition during the period December 1, 2017, until January 1, 2018.

IMPORTANT! Invitations have now been sent by e-mail to all applicants who are currently involved in the application process of 2018. If you haven't received an invitation even though you have applied and submitted any additional information that might be required, and have not been informed that you are no longer in the process, please check your box for spam first and after that contact utbildningsexpedition@hsm.gu.se.

Entrance Requirements

A Bachelor of Arts in the Fine or Applied arts, a professional qualification of at least 180 higher education credits, at least three years of approved full-time studies in a programme for musicians or the equivalent and special requirements that comprise musical skills. Students may be admitted to the programme without having basic eligibility in the form of a degree.


Selection of eligible applicants is based upon assessments of submitted portfolios. All applicants are requested to send in a portfolio of at least three (3) compositions (scores and/or recordings) as well as a proposal on minimum three (3) A4 pages describing their compositional aesthetics.

For the purpose of handling and reviewing work samples, we use an external service provided by SlideRoom Technologies Inc. By using the service, you agree that the University of Gothenburg may handle your personal data and material submitted via SlideRoom in order to evaluate your application for education. The material you upload remains with SlideRoom until you choose to remove it from their servers.

Here you can register to SlideRoom and upload your work samples. You can upload your work samples from 1 December 2017 through 1 February 2018.
NOTE! Material you have uploaded to SlideRoom can no longer be edited or deleted.

The University of Gothenburg may, by individual agreement with the applicant and in a way that the university decides, offer an alternative opportunity to submit work samples.

NB! We only accept submitted material via the institutions online application system. Make sure to submit the material in good time to avoid technical problems. This responsibility lies entirely with you as an applicant.


Applicants who are citizens in countries outside the EU/EEA (or Switzerland), and who are required to pay tuition fees, are encouraged to consider applying for the scholarships listed below. The scholarships will cover either the full cost of the tuition fees for the program admitted to, or a significant part of that fee.
