Apply for Master of Fine Arts in Music with Specialisation in Composition (Experimental Composition and Creation)

This information concerns applications to the Master's of Fine Arts Programme in Music with specialization in Composition.

  1. Apply for the programme through www.universityadmissions.se 
    Application period: 2 December 2019 – 15 January 2020. Note: You have to search for the programme's full official name: Masters of Fine Arts Programme in Music with specialization in Composition.
  2. Submit your portfolio through SlideRoom
    All material must be submitted no later than 24 January 2020.
  3. Deadline to complete your eligibility: 3 February 2020
  4. Interview: 26 February 2020).
  5. Admission decision: 3 April 2020 through My pages on universityadmissions.se


(The following applies to students starting autumn 2020)

You must submit:

  1. A proposal (4000–6000 characters) of the project you plan to develop in your independent work. Explain what you want to work with and how the project idea relates to your artistic practice, preferably with some kind of question. The description should also contain thoughts on theories and methods that may be relevant as well as a reflection on possible references in the project: What have others done in the same or adjacent areas?
  2. At least three (3) compositions/sound art works/installations/performances, notated and/or recorded, which are updated and represent you and your music. Maximal file size for audio is 60 MB, videos 500 MB.
  3. A list of your previous artistic works.
  4. A curriculum vitae.


After reading and listening to the submitted material, we call a limited number of applicants for personal interviews, alternatively by telephone or other digital media interview. This interview is mandatory for all selected applicants.

  • Submit your portfolio

    Your portfolio material i submitted through our digital service SlideRoom: applyartsgu.slideroom.eu
    SlideRoom closes at midnight on the last submission day. After that it is not possible to submit your material. After you submit your portfolio, you will receive a confirmation email from SlideRoom.

    NOTE! Material you have uploaded to SlideRoom can no longer be edited or deleted.

    For the purpose of handling and reviewing work samples, we use an external service provided by SlideRoom Technologies Inc. By using the service, you agree that the University of Gothenburg may handle your personal data and material submitted via SlideRoom in order to evaluate your application for education. The material you upload remains with SlideRoom until you choose to remove it from their servers.

  • Eligibility and selection

    Entry requirements

    Bachelor degree of arts in music or equivalent, and musical knowledge and skills that are assessed at the admission test and are the basis for selection.


    Selection of eligible applicants is based upon entrance tests.

  • Tuition fees

    Students with citizenship in countries not within the EU/EEA, or Switzerland, are required to pay application and tuition fees for university studies in Sweden. Details about fees for this programme are available on the University of Gothenburg main website under Education/Courses and Programmes.

  • Scholarships

    Applicants who are citizens in countries outside the EU/EEA (or Switzerland), and who are required to pay tuition fees, are encouraged to apply for scholarships. Some scholarships will cover either the full cost of the tuition fees for the programme, or a significant part of that fee.

    Make sure that you read the application instructions carefully and that you understand when the application should be submitted (some scholarships require that you apply before you are admitted to the programme).
