MA Composition

Contemporary, experimental composition is the focus of the MA Composition programme. As a student, you are expected to have your own vision of how you will develop artistically over the two years. Teaching takes place in seminary form, and you receive support and supervision from teachers with different approaches and skills so that the education can be tailored to your needs. You study closely with the other students on the MA programme but are also part of different collaborations with both the BA level and other programmes at the Academy of Music and Drama. One example of public projects is the Siren Festival which composition students arrange each year with the Ensemble for New Music and others. The Stockholm Wind Orchestra, the Göteborg Wind Orchestra, Mimitabu, Musica Vitae, Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, Peter Veale Ensemble and Gageego! are some of the professional ensembles that have played student compositions in recent years. A quarter of the programme consists of an independent project where you explore, discuss and document your artistic practice. HSM is a part of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg. As such, you have opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations in film, opera and theatre close at hand. The programme also offers unique opportunities for qualifying for doctoral studies.
