BA Classical Performance

Chamber music and instrumental studies are the focus of the BA programme in classical performance. You will be a part of an international environment characterised by dialogue and openness between students and teachers, with some parts taught in English. During the BA programme, you will be a part of the University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra together with students on the Master's programme. The orchestra has 8–9 major productions each academic year. The classical performance programme collaborates with, among others, the Gothenburg Opera and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, where a majority of the teachers are also active. The Academy of Music and Drama is located in the Artisten building, close to the city's most important music institutions. With so many fine arts programmes under the same roof, there are excellent opportunities for collaborations with students in composition, musical theatre, opera and other programmes.

This programme is taught in English.

Major subject (90 higher education credits)

The major subject (solo instrument) is the focus of the programme. The degree project (15 higher education credits) is integrated with the major subject. Tuition in the solo instrument is offered both individually and in the form of seminars, workshops and master classes. In addition players of orchestral instruments also work with score study and rehearsal teachers (pianists).

The programme also includes a chamber orchestra, brass ensemble, wind ensemble, percussion ensemble and modern music ensemble, which all offer regular concerts. The modern music ensemble works with a 20th and 21st century repertoire in close cooperation with the Academy’s programme in composition and performs music written by students of composition at the annual SIREN festival and elsewhere.

Basic course in music (67.5 higher education credits)

Chamber music plays a prominent role at the Academy of Music and Drama. Each semester the students form chamber ensembles that are taught by experienced chamber music instructors and which present their work in performance or at concerts.

Symphonic works are performed in collaboration with the master class of the University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. The symphony orchestra works with guest conductors during special project weeks that conclude with concerts. The basic course in music includes, for instance, courses in musical theory, ear training, leading ensembles, music and society, ergonomics, future professional roles, ethics and aesthetics, multimedia and learning through music.

Personal profile (22.5 higher education credits)

The personal profile element in the programme provides scope for in-depth or wider study of specific subject areas.

The programme in singing (classical specialization) is offered within the framework of the programme in opera.
