New master's programme in opera

Published

A new master's programme in opera starts at the Academy of Music and Drama in the autumn of 2019. The programme is offered in close cooperation with the Gothenburg Opera, among other opera houses, and is aimed both at those who have just completed a bachelor's degree in opera or equivalent, and to singers with longer professional experience.

The new master's programme, which consists of four full-time semesters, is aimed at both Swedish and foreign singers with a bachelor's degree in opera.

"The process of becoming an opera singer ready for professional life takes time – and so it must be! In a master's programme there is the time required to refine the parts that make an opera soloist: singular, scenic and mental. Therefore, cooperation with the Gothenburg Opera is so important, in order for students to get the important connections through internships and mentorship, "says Monica Danielson, programme supervisor for opera education.

The cooperation with the Gothenburg Opera mainly consists of coaching, mentorship and the student's learning on-site at a production. This is ongoing throughout the study period and the students regularly work with coaches related to the opera house. One of the opera's soloists works as a mentor during the two master years.

In addition to the Gothenburg Opera, the new program also collaborates with the other Swedish opera houses regarding the internship period. Then the students perform within the frame of a production at the Gothenburg Opera, Folkoperan, Wermland Opera or the Norrland Opera.

Teachers related to the education include: Monica Danielson, Mira Bartov, Åsa Bäverstam, Bo Rosenkull, Henrik Schaefer and Ulrich Staerk.

Admission test for study start in the autumn of 2019 takes place 19-21 February 2019. More information on the programme's pages.
