  • We Are Celebrating!

A warm welcome

... to the Academy of Music and Drama and its 2016-17 anniversary

What anniversary are we celebrating? Well, we want to highlight two important events that proved to be the starting point of a long and amazing journey through different stages of development and forms, and that ultimately led to the institution the Academy is today. In 1916 the Gothenburg Orchestra School was formed and 25 years later a 2-year theatre school was begun.

The education, which initially was aimed at classical musicians and actors, gradually expanded and developed into the amazing diversity we have today. The Academy of Music and Drama educates music, dance and drama teachers, composers, musical and performance artists, musicians in many genres, opera singers, and actors. We also provide a wide range of individual courses and train preschool and primary school teachers in the artistic forms of expression. Our students are at the bachelor’s, master’s and postgraduate levels. Add to this our research environment, where research is conducted on both artistic and scientific bases. This breadth makes us unique among art academies in Sweden, creating excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary forms of expression and collaboration across genres.

"Our theme for the anniversary celebration is “Then-Now-Later”, and perhaps it is necessary to look both backward and forward in time to fully understand and act in the present."

An anniversary can also serve as an opportunity to sum up our journey, where we stop, reflect, and learn from a previous era, its events and development. Our theme for the anniversary celebration is "Then-Now-Later", and perhaps it is necessary to look both backward and forward in time to fully understand and act in the present. In connection with some of the autumn’s scheduled events, we have arranged a series of anniversary talks under the title Artistically Speaking, where musicians, performing artists, researchers and others use their different perspectives to discuss and seek answers to the questions Where do we come from? and Where are we going?

The Academy of Music and Drama collaborates with the surrounding community in many ways, not least through our extensive open events with more than 200 public performances and concerts every year in our building Artisten and other locations in and outside of Gothenburg. We also participate in and run several recurring festivals, conferences, networks and exchanges of ideas. Our work is characterised by a constant influx of guest teachers, artists and researchers.

Through its mediation of powerful experiences, art and culture contribute to a more reflective and questioning approach by us as individuals. At the same time, art also inspires interaction and cooperation between people, creating a sense of belonging, something particularly important in an age when integration and the vision of a society for everyone is one of our biggest challenges. Education and learning lead to knowledge and insight, the most effective means of combating prejudices and fears. We want to educate students, who can use their professional skills, artistry, educational passion, creativity, curiosity, openness and playfulness to inspire, influence and contribute to a society full of artistic beauty, knowledge, tolerance and humanism.

Dear guests, we wish to celebrate our anniversary together with you. Welcome!
