The BA Programme in Music with an improvisation specialization is offered for all instruments. The programme can also provide a basis for further study at Master's level.

The programme is taught in Swedish.

Professional areas

The programme is intended to offer preparation for a professional career as a musician specializing in improvised music. In addition the programme is to provide students with the tools needed to enable communication with cultural circles in the surrounding community, knowledge about prevailing conditions in the free-lance sector and contacts in this network.


Major subject (90 higher education credits)
The focus of the programme is to enhance artistic mastery of the solo instrument and each student has great possibilities of influencing the course of their teaching.
An important element consists of ensemble playing: performing with other musicians to enable development of individual musical expression. The degree project (15 higher education credits) is integrated with the major subject.
Solo instrument tuition is offered individually and in an ensemble.

Basic course in music (67.5 higher education credits)
The theory of jazz and rock with individual composition plays a prominent role in the basic course. The history of improvised music in jazz and rock and surveys of improvisation in other forms of music are important elements of the course. Some of the teaching takes the form of project work in which knowledge about and experience of the labour market for improvisation musicians plays a prominent role.
The basic course in music includes courses in musical theory, ear training, artistic development, music and society, ergonomics, future professional roles, learning through music, ethics and aesthetics, multimedia and planning tours.

Personal profile (22.5 higher education credits)
The personal profile element in the programme provides scope for in-depth or wider study of specific subject areas.


Bachelor of Music with specialization in Improvisation Performance, 180 higher education credits.

The basic eligibility requirements for higher education apply for this course. In addition there is an enrolment test on which selection is based. Contact us for further information.
