Student evaluations

Playing with the Guildhall quintet Quintessence and listening to them made me think about our sound and made me also research for new colours. They were all very strong musicians and that helped us to develop as a group.”

I think that the project helped lend an increased sense of perspective on our development”...this project was an incredible experience and I feel strongly that we developed significantly as individuals and as an ensemble over the course of the week. Exposure to another musical environment, quite different to that in London, as well as a different learning environment, offered insight into what is good about our existing approaches/ attitudes as well as providing new ideas for perhaps some new/better approaches. All in all, I think that the project helped lend an increased sense of perspective on our development as an ensemble, as individual players and indeed as individuals in general.”

...we gained a greater sense of belonging...”I felt that we were already a strong and capable quintet, but our experience took our playing to a new level. I think that we all have a new attitude to quintet music... As an ensemble, we gained a greater sense of belonging, as a quintet and decet, and this friendship definitely has a positive effect on the music because we're genuinely enjoying playing with each other and hopefully this is clear to the audience.”

We had a great rehearsal and I knew straight away that it was going to be a rewarding and interesting project, working with and learning from great musicians.”

... it changed our whole approach towards the piece...”After the second session, we’d worked through the entirety of the quintet, and it changed our whole approach towards the piece and even towards our playing as a chamber group. ...
All in all I thought that there was a good balance between work time and free time during our time in Gothenburg. We had time to explore the city, meet up with friends and have nice meals.”

...this trip made me appreciate and further understand the music world outside of the UK. The facilities in the music academy were incredible as was the opera house and the general atmosphere.”

It was a great experience...”For me personally this week gave me a lot of inspiration and motivation. It was a great experience to meet the quintet from London and to play with them. Our way of playing is different but it was very interesting to overcome this fact and be able to make music together.”

From having such an intense week of coaching it has also shown me a little bit of what a busy life a musician can lead, travelling from country to country, having coaching from many different people, putting on several concerts and meeting new colleagues.”
