Artistic Research Environment

Many among the teaching staff at the Academy of Music and Drama have artistic careers outside the university. Their work is not artistic research proper, but since artistic skills and experience are keys to artistic research, this ‘artistic environment’ is a necessary prerequisite for the research environment.
Their artistic work does not ‘belong’ to the Academy of Music and Drama. On the contrary, what the teachers do as artists outside the university is their property, but their experience becomes part of our environment. Artistic research demands knowledge and expertise across a varied range of artistic practices and institutions. No individual artist/teacher operates in isolation. Each individual has her/his own competency, her/his own market, and her/his own cultural status. Yet all these people interact with each other to constitute a research environment. Our department has expertise in music and drama in a range of European, Asian, African, Middle-Eastern, and American contexts.
By learning from this range of competencies, researchers and students are encouraged to reflect upon artistic work, to pose alternative questions and offer alternative answers, all of which enable us better to address contemporary concerns about artistic form, content, context, and change.
