Research and artistic development work at the Academy of Music and Drama involve the development and problematisation of the artistic and pedagogical methods, identities and skills that form artists and pedagogues in the fields of music, music drama and stage art.
Artistic research and pedagogical research and development projects with the arts have their starting-point in specific artistic questions or pedagogical questions within the arts, and they result in either an artistic project (with or without written or recorded documentation) or in a scientific project.
The artistic development projects are generally complete in themselves (they may have as their focus performance techniques, interpretative practice, strategies of composition, methods of analysis and documentation etc.). They may however also sometimes be seen as a kind of experimental field for future research projects. Pedagogical research and development projects within the arts are accounted for and published in the form of articles and/or other types of publication.
Within the framework for the disciplines of music pedagogy and aesthetic forms of expression focused on educational sciences respectively, research is carried out concerning questions of the didactics of art (focused on teaching within the basic school system and also higher artistic teaching) as well as more cross-border questions of artistic pedagogy.
Via among others the Göteborg Organ Art Center(GOArt) and the electro-acoustic Lindblad Studio, the Academy of Music and Drama provides an advanced environment for research and education with musical instruments as a laboratory for experiments in interpretation, improvisation and composition, as well as enabling completely different questions on historically-underpinned interpretation, instrumental and cultural history, research on materials, acoustics, electronics, computer sciences etc. to be asked.
By uniting stage and body in a shared laboratory for artistic research into theatre, the Academy’s actors’ education combines present-day research with experimental theatre, projects in improvisation and postdramatic theatre and music drama, as well as with documentation of Yat Malmgren’s pedagogical methods.
Research and developments projects within the fields of art and art pedagogy make the Academy of Music and Drama into a compelling environment that can encompass different types of artistic, theoretical and methodological portals, through which new combinations of education and research can be developed.
Platform for Artistic Research Sweden (PARSE)
PARSE is an international art and research publishing and conferencing initiative based at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
Combining a biennial research conference and a twice-annually published peer-review research journal, PARSE provides a forum for dialogue between artistic researchers and researchers from other domains and disciplines. PARSE seeks to promote an innovative multidisciplinary research culture in the arts (understood as including music, performing arts, art, design, architecture, literature, film and media.) In creating dialogues and exploring collaborations between researchers in the arts and in other disciplines, PARSE respects the need for the integrity, freedom and specificity of artistic practices.
The first issue of the journal will be published in spring 2015, and on 5-6 November 2015 the first conference will take place in Gothenburg.
