Mist Þorkelsdóttir, Dean and Director of Music Education at the Iceland Academy of the Arts has been appointed as the new Head of Department at the Academy of Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg. She will be taking up her new appointment in the summer.
Mist Þorkelsdóttir, herself a composer, is also highly active as a teacher of composition. She is moreover extensively involved in international work, for example within the AEC (Association Européenne des Conservatoires), and the ANMA (Association of Nordic Academies).
”I´m honored and very happy to have the opportunity to lead HSM and thus take part in nurturing and strengthening our Nordic civilization and culture in an increasingly globalized world” comments Mist Þorkelsdóttir.
She continues: ”It is every individual´s right to be able to understand the way all art and artistic expression creates and recreates emotions and situations, giving new meaning and understanding to our environment. The Academy, and it´s graduates, has a key role in making this happen.”
The recruitment process for the appointment of a new academic Head of Department has been ongoing ever since Staffan Rydén was appointed to the post of Head of Cultural Affairs in the Västra Götaland Region in the early summer of 2013.
A panel of staff and students at the Academy of Music and Drama has been working to formulate the proposal in hand after which Ingrid Elam, the Dean of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts made the decision to appoint Mist Þorkelsdóttir:
”In Mist Þorkelsdóttir, the Academy of Music and Drama will be gaining a Head of Department who is active artistically and whose reputation is internationally established. Mist Þorkelsdóttir has moreover developed and directed the Department of Music at the Iceland Academy of the Arts since it was inaugurated in 2001.
I look forward to working with Mist and offer my warmest congratulations to both her and the Academy of Music and Drama on this most excellent choice of Head of Department!” affirms Ingrid Elam.
